Double headed rubber on a wooden handle. Drives a spike without marking the edging it goes through.
Every metal and plastic edging run in this shop is installed by driving spikes through tabs, and this is what you drive them with.
A claw hammer will do it and will also chip the powder coating off a black steel section and split a plastic tab.
The head is 55 mm across and 90 mm long, double faced, so when one side wears you turn it round.
It is bounce resistant, which sounds like marketing and is not: a mallet that rebounds costs you the second half of every swing and misses more often.
The handle is wood rather than fibreglass, which absorbs more of the shock through a long installation.
This is a small purchase that changes how an edging installation goes, so it is worth being clear about why.
Spikes go through a tab moulded or punched into the edging. Hit that tab with steel and you either chip a coating or crack a plastic moulding, and on a long run you will do it repeatedly.
