The half moon shovel is the traditional edging iron, and it has not changed much because it did not need to.
A curved blade pressed into turf gives you a curve. That is the entire argument for owning one alongside a spade.
The step bar across the shoulder of the blade lets you stand on it, so the cut comes from your weight rather than your shoulders.
