Looking after it

Nothing. The patina forms and then stabilises on its own. Do not paint or seal it, which prevents the weathering that protects the steel underneath.

Steel that rusts on purpose, and then stops.

High grade corten supplied already weathered, in interlocking 1075 mm sections. The finish designers ask for by name.

Corten is the edging people have usually seen somewhere and then come looking for.

It is weathering steel, A606-4, an alloy formulated so the first layer of rust is dense and tightly bonded. Once it has formed it slows further corrosion instead of accelerating it the way ordinary rust does on mild steel.

That is why it never needs painting or sealing, and why the finish is the product rather than a coating on top of it.

Ours is supplied already weathered, so it looks right the day it goes in rather than after a winter of raw grey steel.

Same 1.5 mm gauge and 1075 mm interlocking sections as the black steel range.

Corten Steel Garden Edging 100 mm (per metre)

Weathering steel was developed to remove the need for painting structural steel. The alloy is mixed so that the surface oxide is dense and tightly bonded, and once that layer has formed it slows further corrosion rather than flaking off and exposing fresh metal underneath.

Corten Steel Garden Edging 100 mm (per metre)

In a garden that means edging you install and then genuinely forget about. Nothing to paint, nothing to seal, nothing to service.

Corten Steel Garden Edging 100 mm (per metre)

The look is why most people buy it. Orange brown against green planting reads as deliberate in a way a black or a bright edge does not, and it gets more convincing as the beds fill in around it.

Corten Steel Garden Edging 100 mm (per metre)

Two things worth knowing before you order. While the patina is still forming, run off can stain pale paving, render or decking sitting directly below the edging, so think about what is underneath it. And the finish is not uniform: variation between sections is normal and is part of the material rather than a fault.

Corten Steel Garden Edging 100 mm (per metre)

At 1.5 mm it takes a gentle curve well and a tight one badly. For a circle around a tree, work in a wider radius than you would with the plastic kit.

Not sure yet? That is fine.

You have 15 days from delivery to change your mind under this shop's own returns policy: send the goods back in resaleable condition at your cost, and the refund covers the goods but not the original shipping charge. Nothing is deducted for handling.

If it turns up faulty, damaged or not as described, that is on us. Your province's consumer protection law covers you, we pay the return postage, and you can have a repair, a replacement or your money back. Read the full detail on our refunds and returns page, or ask us anything before you order.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is corten steel?

A weathering steel alloy, A606-4, formulated so the surface rust forms a dense tightly bonded layer that slows further corrosion instead of flaking away.

Does it arrive already rusted?

Yes. It is supplied ready weathered, so it looks right the day it goes in rather than after a winter of raw grey steel.

Will it keep rusting away?

No. The patina forms and then stabilises. That is the whole point of the alloy.

Will it stain my paving?

It can, while the patina is still forming. Run off from weathering steel marks pale paving, render and decking, so think about what sits directly below the edging. If that is a concern, the stainless range does not weather at all.

What face height is it?

100 mm.

How long are the sections?

1075 mm, which lay one metre once you allow the 75 mm interlock overlap. So one section is one metre of finished run.

How thick is it?

1.5 mm gauge, the same as the black steel and three times the stainless.

How many spikes come with it?

Seven 100 mm spikes per section.

Can I bend it round a curve?

A gentle one, yes. At 1.5 mm it is the stiffest edging we sell, so a tight circle is easier in the 0.5 mm stainless or the plastic kit.

Should I paint or seal it?

No. Painting or sealing prevents the weathering that protects the steel underneath, which defeats the material.

Is the colour consistent between sections?

No, and that is normal rather than a fault. Variation across a run is part of how the material looks.

How do I install it?

Lay the run, overlap each section into the next by the interlock tab, then drive the spikes through with a rubber mallet. No trench, no concrete.

How does it stop grass runners?

Hammer roughly 30 mm of the edge itself into the ground as well as the spikes. That gives a continuous vertical barrier runners will not cross.

How long will it last?

Weathering steel is specified in architecture precisely because it lasts without maintenance. There is nothing on it to fail and nothing to repaint.

What is the difference between corten and ordinary rusty steel?

Bare cold rolled steel rusts and keeps rusting until it fails. Corten rusts to a protective layer and then effectively stops.

Does it work next to gravel?

Very well. The orange brown against grey gravel and green planting is the combination the material is usually bought for.

How much does a section weigh?

1.6 kg.

Do you cut it to length before shipping?

No. Sections ship whole and you trim if you want a shorter run, so this shop's 15 day change-of-mind policy covers it like anything else here.

How much is delivery?

Shipping anywhere in Canada is CAD 25, and it is free once your order reaches CAD 100. There is one shipping service rather than a choice of speeds.

How long does delivery take?

Five to seven days, after a 24 to 48 hour handling time while the order is picked and packed.

Do you ship across the whole of Canada?

Yes, to any Canadian address, at the same flat rate and in the same 5 to 7 days once the order has been handled. We ship to Canadian addresses only.

Is there a minimum order?

No. The per metre and per section ranges are sold by the unit, so you can order one metre or one section if that is all you need.

Can I change my mind after it arrives?

Yes, under this shop's own policy. Canada has no general cooling-off period for an online purchase, so this is our policy rather than a legal right: you have 15 days from delivery, the goods come back in resaleable condition at your cost, and the refund covers the goods but not the original shipping charge. Nothing is deducted for handling. Email us with your order number first.

What if the item is faulty or not what was described?

That is a separate right under your province's consumer protection and sale of goods law, and it does not depend on the 15 days. You can ask for a repair, a replacement or a refund, and we pay the return postage.

Who pays return postage if I simply change my mind?

You do, unless the item is faulty or we sent the wrong thing.

Can I cancel before it ships?

Yes, free of charge. Email us with your order number within 12 hours: orders are handled within 24 to 48 hours, and once one has shipped it can no longer be cancelled.

How do I track my order?

You get a confirmation email with a tracking number once the order ships. Items in one order can travel in separate parcels.

What payment methods do you take?

Card payment and PayPal, both through a secure checkout. Card details are handled by the payment provider and never reach this site.

What currency are prices in?

Canadian dollars, and that is what your card is charged.

Do you sell to trade or in bulk?

Yes. Use the wholesale quote page with the lengths and quantities you need and we will come back with a price.
