You have 15 days from delivery to change your mind under this shop's own returns policy: send the goods back in resaleable condition at your cost, and the refund covers the goods but not the original shipping charge. Nothing is deducted for handling. You cover the cost of returning it unless the item is faulty.

If it arrives faulty, damaged or not as described, we put it right at no cost to you, return postage included. That right comes from your province's consumer protection and sale of goods law, not from this policy.

Looking after it

Knock the soil off after use and dry the blade. A wipe of oil on the blade before winter storage stops rust starting at the cutting edge.

Half Moon BladeCuts a clean curved line rather than a scalloped one
Step Bar For LeveragePuts your body weight straight over the blade
95 cm Long HandleCuts standing up rather than bent over
Powder Coated SteelBuilt for years of use, not a season

A half moon blade with a step, so your weight does the cutting.

Powder coated steel, 95 cm tall. The tool that cuts the trench the edging drops into.

This is the tool that makes the difference between an edge you cut and an edge that looks cut.

The blade is a half moon, so each press gives you a smooth arc. A spade gives you a series of straight chords, which is what makes a hand cut curve look scalloped.

The step bar across the top of the blade is the working part. You stand on it, and your body weight goes straight down through the cutting edge instead of coming from your arms.

At 95 cm it is used standing up, which is why it is a different job from the same cut made with a border spade.

It ships in two parts, handle and head, for safe carriage.

Manual Lawn Edging Tool, Tool Head Only (no handle)

Every edging job starts with a line, and the line is cut before anything is installed.

Manual Lawn Edging Tool, Tool Head Only (no handle)

The half moon shape is the whole design. Pressing a straight spade into turf repeatedly gives you a polygon, and the eye reads a polygon on what should be a curve immediately. An arc shaped blade gives you an arc.

Manual Lawn Edging Tool, Tool Head Only (no handle)

The step bar is the other half. Cutting turf takes real force, and pushing a blade with your arms tires you out in about ten metres. Standing on the bar transfers your weight through the blade, which is both easier and more consistent.

Manual Lawn Edging Tool, Tool Head Only (no handle)

It is a lifetime tool if it is looked after: powder coated steel with nothing to break and no moving parts.

Manual Lawn Edging Tool, Tool Head Only (no handle)

For installing our per metre edging, cut the line with this first, then open the trench slightly and drop the edging in before spiking. It is a far cleaner result than forcing the edging into uncut turf.

Not sure yet? That is fine.

You have 15 days from delivery to change your mind under this shop's own returns policy: send the goods back in resaleable condition at your cost, and the refund covers the goods but not the original shipping charge. Nothing is deducted for handling.

If it turns up faulty, damaged or not as described, that is on us. Your province's consumer protection law covers you, we pay the return postage, and you can have a repair, a replacement or your money back. Read the full detail on our refunds and returns page, or ask us anything before you order.

Frequently Asked Questions

How tall is it?

95 cm, so it is used standing up rather than bent over.

How much does it weigh?

2 kg.

What is the blade shape?

A half moon, which gives a smooth arc on each press. A straight spade gives you a series of chords, and that is what makes a hand cut curve look scalloped.

What is the step bar for?

You stand on it, so your body weight goes down through the cutting edge instead of the cut coming from your arms.

Does it arrive assembled?

No. It ships in two parts, handle and head, for safe carriage.

What is it made of?

Powder coated steel.

Is it the same as the half moon shovel?

They are close relatives and both cut an edge. This one is listed as the lawn edging tool and the other as the half moon shovel.

Can I use it to trench for edging?

Yes. Cut the line first, open the cut slightly, then set the edging in before spiking it. That is a far cleaner result than forcing edging into uncut turf.

How do I keep the edge looking cut?

Re-cut twice a season and it takes a couple of minutes. Let it go and you are cutting the whole shape again in spring.

What is the right technique?

Work backwards along the line so you always stand on uncut turf, keep the blade vertical rather than angled into the bed, and press in one movement instead of rocking.

Does it need sharpening?

A file on the cutting edge once a season keeps it cutting rather than tearing.

How do I stop it rusting?

Knock the soil off after use, dry the blade, and wipe it with oil before winter storage.

Can I use it on hard dry ground?

It will cut, but a day after rain is far easier on both the tool and you.

Will it cut through tree roots?

Fine surface roots, yes. It is not a mattock and should not be used on anything substantial.

How wide is the blade?

23 cm.

Is it suitable for a small garden?

Yes, though for a very short edge a border spade you already own will do the job.

What is the difference between the two options?

One is the tool head on its own and one is the complete kit with the handle. Choose the head only if you are replacing a head you already have a handle for.

Can I leave it outside?

Better not. Steel and a wooden handle both last longer under cover.

How much is delivery?

Shipping anywhere in Canada is CAD 25, and it is free once your order reaches CAD 100. There is one shipping service rather than a choice of speeds.

How long does delivery take?

Five to seven days, after a 24 to 48 hour handling time while the order is picked and packed.

Do you ship across the whole of Canada?

Yes, to any Canadian address, at the same flat rate and in the same 5 to 7 days once the order has been handled. We ship to Canadian addresses only.

Is there a minimum order?

No. The per metre and per section ranges are sold by the unit, so you can order one metre or one section if that is all you need.

Can I change my mind after it arrives?

Yes, under this shop's own policy. Canada has no general cooling-off period for an online purchase, so this is our policy rather than a legal right: you have 15 days from delivery, the goods come back in resaleable condition at your cost, and the refund covers the goods but not the original shipping charge. Nothing is deducted for handling. Email us with your order number first.

What if the item is faulty or not what was described?

That is a separate right under your province's consumer protection and sale of goods law, and it does not depend on the 15 days. You can ask for a repair, a replacement or a refund, and we pay the return postage.

Who pays return postage if I simply change my mind?

You do, unless the item is faulty or we sent the wrong thing.

Can I cancel before it ships?

Yes, free of charge. Email us with your order number within 12 hours: orders are handled within 24 to 48 hours, and once one has shipped it can no longer be cancelled.

How do I track my order?

You get a confirmation email with a tracking number once the order ships. Items in one order can travel in separate parcels.

What payment methods do you take?

Card payment and PayPal, both through a secure checkout. Card details are handled by the payment provider and never reach this site.

What currency are prices in?

Canadian dollars, and that is what your card is charged.

Do you sell to trade or in bulk?

Yes. Use the wholesale quote page with the lengths and quantities you need and we will come back with a price.
